Dear Parents,

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to our NGPA family!  We are very happy you chose to join our network of supportive parents & family members.  You have just joined an elite & unique group and are entering a new phase in your child’s life.

As most of you know, your student is not quite the grown-up adult they think they are, but way past the children we still wish they were.  This is a very difficult time for all of you, some of you will suffer terrible “empty-nest” syndrome & separation anxiety; while others will rejoice in having the extra bedroom for storing the “junk” or just having a little peace & quite in your house for the first time in 18 years.   What makes us so unique & elite is the opportunity to be a part of your college student’s new life, other than just signing the tuition checks & opening the pocketbook.

You can be as active as you choose to be as a volunteer parent for campus events or you can merely enjoy the parking pass & the Parent’s Guide, which contains information gained by those of us who have learned our lessons the hard way.  We are happy to offer our support to you & share advice with you if you desire.  We also take your membership fee & funnel these funds back into the University to the students & faculty by sponsoring emergency loan funds, purchasing items for the students to enhance their student life and also assist in funding events to offer support to the students & faculty during campus events.  Please visit our Projects section on our website at www.ngpa.net for a list of our completed & proposed future projects.

But mainly, I want to personally welcome you to our group on behalf of all the Council members & let you know, even though we are NOT the PTA, since we do not participate in the University’s policy making & administrative issues; we are the Parents Association of North Georgia College & State University and offer 100% support for all the students and faculty of NGCSU.  You can be proud to let everyone know you have been given the opportunity to be included in this important time of your college student’s life, “without getting into their space” or “interfering with their new lifestyle”.   I think you will be glad you have chosen to join the NGPA in the future days to come.   It’s great to feel the support of other parents who are in your shoes & having to let their “babies” go off into the big world of college life.  And the greatest benefit is having a resource for answering those questions that can only be answered by one who has “walked the walk” & “been there, done that”.

Please feel free to e-mail either of the following Council Officers for more information;  faithwheeler@bellsouth.net or  wandahenry@optilink.net or call any of the other Council members listed in your Parent’s Guide with any questions.  And again, welcome to the North Georgia Parents Association.

Faith Wheeler,  Immediate Past President
