NGPA
Project List (or Things that have been done list):
-
Cannon Restoration: One of the
first projects was assisting with the funding of the
restoration of the 1902 Cannon that will be dedicated at
this years Parents/Alumni Weekend. The 1902 three-inch bre ech gun, or cannon, returned to its old home on the university’s Retreat Triangle
after a four-year absence, and a $4,500 restoration project, sponsored by the North Georgia Parents’ Association. The wooden wheels on the cannon had deteriorated and the NGPA, under the leadership of Barney
Poole (past NGPA President), raised the funds to replicate the wheels with two die-cast aluminum replacements. The NGPA donated $2,000 with additional contributions coming from alumni and students. The cannon has been on campus since at least 1969, according to Col. Tom Palmer, commandant of cadets, who was a student at the time. The other cannon, a 75 mm pack howitzer, now outside the military science department, will still “sound” reveille and retreat when it is fired every weekday. The century-old cannon
is on display at the triangle.. Retired Master Sgt. Al Nowak, commandant’s
office is shown pressure washing the triangle’s brick foundation after the cannon was set up.
-
Patch Sew-on: Savings to the
cadets is now up to more than $5,500 not to mention saving
the cadet's valuable time while waiting for the local
establishments to do them! The Patch SEW-ON service
that NGPA provides to the Military Cadets free of charge was
started last January 2003 by Faith Wheeler. Since then we
have sewn on over 2300 patches & made numerous repairs
to their uniforms for new FROGs and current Cadets. The
Cadets have been great and display warm feelings of
gratitude & appreciation during all our efforts! Thanks
to Faith and her dedicated "corp of parent
volunteers" for continuing to make this happen.
If you haven't participated yet and wondering what to do,
this is the area to jump in and get your feet
wet!
-
Welcome Tent: This is the tent
set up at the edge of the Drill Field during the Fall FROG
week graduation to pass out free water to the parents,
family & students. Recently attended the Spring FROG
graduation & made homemade spiced cider & coffee to
pass out to the parents, family & students who braved
the "sub arctic" temperatures to cheer on the
Frogs as they ran Crown Mountain.
-
Sorority Bid Day: Sorority
Bid Day is an exciting time for NGCSU girls who rush for a
Sorority. This is the day they find out which Sorority they
have been accepted into and they are so excited. Tradition
is that the new rushees run down the hill of the drill field
at 1:00 p.m. into the waiting arms of current Sorority
members and alumni. They cheer, chant, scream, and pictures
are taken of each Sorority. This is the 3rd year that the
North Georgia Parents Association has participated in
Sorority Bid Day by providing pizza and coke products after
the festivities. This year we estimated that we served
approximately 400 girls. Dominos has worked closely with us
each year and we appreciate their hard work during this
special day in these girls lives. The NGPA sets up the
welcome tent & passes out free Pizza & Drinks on the
Drill Field during Rush. During
day, we served pizza & coke purchased & donated by
the Council.
-
Sabers- Association purchased 4
Sabers & Sam Brown Belts to be donated to the Corp.
-
On-going Projects: Emergency
Text Book Fund & Uniform Assistance Fund that is
administered by the School, but funded annually by the NGPA.
NGPA also attended INTROs to answer questions from parents
& students. We publish a Parents' Handbook that we give
to parents when they join our Association that contains very
useful information about campus & military life.
This website (of course). Other projects being
considered are; out-door furniture and items for the
commuter lounge.
-
Future projects: With more volunteers
we can do more great things for our students to enjoy!

Host Family information:
Interested in helping others by sharing your home with a NGCSU international student during the holidays as a “host” family? A few have host families who take them to their homes for holidays, etc. but many do not. This is a great opportunity to not only help someone, but also provide them with a unique up close and personal opportunity to better understand our culture. Hosting International visitors is the best way to experience the world without leaving your home! Hosting provides families with the unique opportunity to share their cultures and learn about different cultures, from the comfort of your own home.
If you are interested, then the NGCSU Coordinator of International/ESL Services would like to hear from you!
NGCSU has approximately 37 international students from many countries. One is a graduate student and the others are undergraduate, ranging in age from 20-27 and about evenly split between males and females. The countries represented are Bosnia & Herzegovinia, Bangladesh, Ivory Coast, Iraq, Russia, Zimbabwe, Hong Kong, Bulgaria, Canada, Ethiopia, Japan, Sweden, Slovakia, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Pakistan, Zambia, Cameroon, Kenya, Sweden, Dominican Republic, Brazil, Liberia, Chile, France, and South Korea. All speak English well enough to be in regular classes, are highly motivated, and academically strong.
Besides making this type of connection, which helps them to understand our culture and not feel so lonely here, they are, from time to time, in need of financial assistance. Sometimes they need tuition money, or books money, or they have emergencies that call for funds they don't have and cannot get quickly. So, if anyone is interested in opening their homes from time to time, donating money through a special fund that the NGCSU Coordinator of International/ESL Services has set up, or any other type of support please contact Dr. Carmen Mas, CMAS@ngcsu.edu (706-864-1433), or Ann Tallant, Coordinator of International/ESL Services, ATALLANT@ngcsu.edu or through the NGPA and we will pass the information on.
